Mumbles
Mumbles is the gateway to Gower. It lies at the western extremity of Swansea Bay, and its name has come to be inclusive of everywhere between Blackpill and Langland - West Cross, Norton, Newton and Oystermouth. Originally , the name Mumbles was given to the headland with its prominent twin limestone islets. Fear of a French invasion during the Napoleonic wars led to Mumbles Head being equiped in readiness. A lighthouse was built on the outer islet in 1793, and further fortified in 1860, and a costal fort in 1861.
Mumbles boasts of a Norman castle, with dungeons, a Norman church were Rowan Williams, present Archbishop of Cantebury served as a chorister and altar boy, a pier and lifeboat station and two boating clubs.
In his book ' The Real Swansea ' (2008) Nigel Jenkins speaks of one of the past day glories - the Mumbles train. " The railway was to transport coal from Clyne and limestone from Ostermouth to the industries of the Lower Swansea Valley. When it began to carry passengers in 1807 it became the first public service passenger railway in the World " - a record that Mumbles has always prided itself of.
In past times, Mumbles was a fishing village, some of the fishermens cottages are to be seen today in the backstreets. However, by today, it is a bustling tourist venue, with numerous fine resturants, coffee shops and ice cream parlours. It is a very desirable place to live, as the high prices of properties show. There are many high profile residents, chief of which is Catherine Zeta Jones who resides here on her occasional visits home.
